Student Government

New College is a different kind of college, which means we have a different kind of student government. Our students are truly empowered to control their own destinies through a very active form of direct democracy.

The New College Student Alliance (NCSA) is the governing body of the students. Its purpose is to foster a shared sense of community and to preserve New College’s identity and vitality as a unique alternative in American higher education. The NCSA acts on behalf of the students regarding education and the academic well-being of the college and its students. It also represents students’ interests in the administrative affairs of the college and the state of Florida and works to assure an environment free from discrimination. It has its own constitution, which includes a student bill of rights.

Under the umbrella of the NCSA is a Council of Academic Affairs, which acts on behalf of students’ interests on academic and administrative policies and sends representatives to attend various faculty meetings. There is also a Council of Student Affairs, whose Student Allocations Committee distributes funds designated to enrich campus life through activities that may involve guest speakers, touring groups or even T-shirts.

The Towne Meeting is the highest form of student government at New College, and serves as a form of legislature. At monthly meetings, we gather opinions and ideas from students on matters of concern to the college community, propose and enact informed legislation, and confirm presidential appointments to NCSA positions. Everyone gets a vote and a voice -- democracy in action, the New College way.

Overall, our student government assures that, to the greatest degree possible, students have control over all decisions that affect them.
