New Music New College

This innovative series is a treasure for contemporary arts enthusiasts and features outstanding musicians from the Gulf Coast and around the country. In 2008-2009, we celebrate the 10th season of New Music New College. The five-concert series  includes a number of pre-concert lectures and free public workshops. The vision for New Music New College lays with its director, music professor Stephen Miles.

New College of Florida and The Hermitage Artist Retreat are collaborating to offer a “Meet the Composer” series on the New College campus in 2008-09. Four of the Hermitage’s Composers-in-Residence will offer free community discussions and demonstrations in the College Hall music room at 7:00 pm: Daniel Levy (November 18); Nico Muhly (March 10), Wang Jie (March 17) and Mandy Fang (April 21).

The ideas are fresh and so is the name!  Hot Topics is now New Topics, a collaboration of the New College Foundation and New College of Florida.  Our newest community series pairs prominent national speakers with New College faculty for stimulating discussions on relevant topics of our time. All programs will be preceded by a brief “prelude” by New College students engaged in related fields of study.  The “postludes” feature a champagne dessert reception and an opportunity to meet the speakers, students and faculty.  Complete program information at New Topics New College.

This annual Judaic Studies Lecture is sponsored by the Klingenstein Chair of Judaic Studies and the Jay Rudolph Endowment.  The 2009 speaker will be Nora Rubel, Assistant Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester.  Professor Rubel will discuss early 20th century American Jewish Communities and the Settlement House cookbook.

Each February we celebrate the birthdays of U.S. presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln with a lecture by some of the nation’s leading scholars. The 2009 speaker will be David Shi, Professor of History and President of Furman University.

New College Library Association Colloquium

Offered since 1993, the NCLA Colloquium is an annual in-depth study and discussion of current issues presented by the New College Library Association. The NCLA Colloquium is held over a period of three days with sessions in the morning.  Richard Marcus, MD, is the moderator. The 2009 topic is “The Modern American Family under Attack.” Attendance is limited to fewer than 50 participants in order to encourage stimulating discussion.
