New College Announces Andrew Walker as New Foundation President

Sarasota, FL, November 17, 2008 - New College of Florida has announced that Andrew Walker will take over as president of the New College Foundation on December 1, 2008. Walker previously held the position of International Director of Trustee Programs for The Nature Conservancy in Arlington, VA, for which he also served 12 years as executive director of Conservancy chapters in New York and Tennessee. Walker succeeds New College alum John Cranor, who stepped aside in July following a five-year term as the College’s Foundation head, and interim President Jim Harman, who has overseen operations for the past several months.

Passing of Arland Christ-Janer

Arland Christ-Janer, former president of New College and two-time president of Ringling College of Art & Design, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2008.  A lifelong supporter of higher education, Christ-Janer remained devoted to New College even after his presidency at the school, serving many years on the New College Foundation Board.  (more…)

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Ranks New College #8 “Best Value” in U.S.

October 31, 2008 - Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has named the 100 best values in public colleges for 2009, ranking four-year schools that combine outstanding economic value with top-notch education.  For the sixth consecutive time, New College of Florida ranks in the top 10, placing at #8 on this year’s Kiplinger’s list. The list is published in the December 2008 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine—on newsstands Tuesday, November 11th —and available starting October 31, 2008 at www.kiplinger.com/money/collegevalues. New College and Hermitage Artist Retreat Announce Collaboration

October 29, 2008 - New College of Florida (Sarasota) and The  Hermitage Artist Retreat (Manasota Key) have announced a first-time collaboration in which Hermitage composers-in-residence will offer free community discussions on the New College campus in 2008 and 2009. (more…)

October 24, 2008 - Organizations from Sarasota and Manatee counties are uniting to continue the 20 year World AIDS Day tradition in a Health/Wellness Expo and AIDS Walk on Saturday, November 22 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at New College of Florida’s Harry Sudakoff Center (5845 General Dougher Place), just north of University Parkway, in Sarasota. New College Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies Meg Lowman Selected for Fulbright Specialist Roster

October 15, 2008 – The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars announced that Meg Lowman, professor of biology and environmental studies and director of environmental initiatives at New College of Florida, has passed the Fulbright competition to qualify for their highly competitive Specialists Roster. Consideration for the Fulbright Specialists Roster required Lowman to demonstrate that she is a leader in her field. As a specialist, Lowman will be placed with overseas academic institutions in countries where needs for conservation, forest ecology or science education are requested. (more…)

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Praises New College of Florida, Reaffirms Accreditation

October 10, 2008 — An on-site review team for the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) today announced that it will recommend reaffirmation of accreditation for New College of Florida without any recommendations for improvements needed by the College.  Reaffirming a college’s accreditation “without recommendations,” as SACS terms it, is a rare accomplishment according to SACS’ Vice President Dr. Gerald Lord and one in which New College should take great pride. New College’s Sonia Wu, Trustee John Saputo Receive NAACP Awards

October 3, 2008 – New College of Florida Director of Multicultural and Transfer Recruitment Sonia Wu and New College Trustee John Saputo were awarded Freedom Awards by the Sarasota County NAACP during the organization’s Twenty-third Annual Freedom Awards banquet held on October 2 at the Hyatt Sarasota.  Wu, who is also a New College alumna, was honored for her outstanding achievements in the area of Community Service, while Saputo was recognized for his lifelong efforts to promote equality and social justice in the workplace.
