New College welcomes transfer applicants. Roughly 25% of our student body transfers to New College from other colleges.

SHOULD I APPLY AS A TRANSFER?

You should apply as a transfer if either of the following describes your case:

• You have (or will have) enrolled in any college course work beginning fall (or later) after high school graduation; or

• You have completed or expect to complete at least 12 semester hours of college course work during the summer after high school graduation.

If you are a dual enrollment student, please apply as a freshman candidate unless you are planning to complete 12 or more semester hours of college course work during the summer after high school graduation. We will still consider your college course work for transfer credit, so please have your college transcript sent and request a transfer credit evaluation.

HOW WILL MY CREDIT TRANSFER?

New College accepts for transfer courses in the liberal arts and sciences completed with a grade of C or above at an accredited, post-secondary, degree-granting college or university. Transferable credits must appear on an official transcript.

Courses acceptable for transfer to New College generally fall into the following areas:

• Humanities: art history, classics, fine arts (studio arts), languages, literature, music, philosophy, and religion.

• Natural Sciences: biology, botany, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, and physics.

• Social Sciences: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology.

Language credit transfers only if the language has been studied for one year or more. One semester of a foreign language does not yield a useful level of proficiency or preparation for further study. Only one semester of pre-calculus mathematics (college level) transfers.

New College does not accept transfer credit by examination (CLEP, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, etc.). CLEP, AP, and IB scores at certain levels may, however, be used to meet Liberal Arts Curriculum requirements.

The maximum transfer credit granted, regardless of the number of credits earned elsewhere, is three New College academic contracts (the equivalent of three semesters) and one independent study project. All students must be in academic residence for a minimum of four contracts and two independent study projects. Transfer students who have been awarded maximum transfer credit may need to be enrolled longer than the minimum remaining four semesters to complete requirements for a major and a senior thesis.

Generally, 16 credits correspond to one New College academic contract; 4 credits correspond to one ISP.
