Our students enjoy a healthy balance of academics and extracurricular activities. Each year, they participate in hundreds of community activities and service projects - some college-sponsored, others initiated and run by students. Students have said that they truly appreciate the ability to shape the campus atmosphere through their own initiative. If you are drawn to the arts, you can sing in the New College chorus, work on the literary magazine, be in our theatrical productions, or join other students in planning the annual Festival of the Arts. If human service work touches your heart, you can knit hats for tiny patients at a cancer center, aid migrant workers, or volunteer at Head Start. If you want to educate young minds, join the award-winning Student Outreach in the Sciences (SOS) program at local elementary schools, tutor at the Boys & Girls Club, or collect books for Africa.
Student life is enriched through the many ways we learn outside the classroom. At New College, you can join an archaeological dig, intern at a world-class museum, or assist in the pathology lab at a leading Alzheimer's research center. You can shadow a physician, conduct manatee research at a leading marine laboratory, submit a film for discussion at the Filmmaker's Forum, or guide visitors on the Myakka State Park tree canopy walkway.
To stay in shape, you can tone your muscles at our professionally managed indoor Fitness Center, swim in the pool or play racquetball. You can check out canoes, sailboats and gear for camping and scuba diving. And while we don't have competitive sports teams (except for sailing), we play soccer, basketball and Frisbee; we fence; and we move giant pawns around on our outdoor chessboard. For the traditional game, you can join the Passed Pawns chess club.
Outside campus, the greater Sarasota-Bradenton area is renowned for its thriving arts scene, white sand Gulf beaches and acres of protected wetlands and state parks. You can take a stand-up comedy workshop, spend a day at a local festival, or develop your own radio show. The Saturday morning farmers' market is popular with students and faculty alike, and downtown features an abundance of coffee shops, quaint restaurants, bookstores, theaters and shopping to suit any taste.
It all adds up to a college experience that is as rich in real-life experience as it is in academic excellence.
