Stop 2: Campus & Facilities
At New College of Florida, you'll never have to worry about crossing the campus through drafts of snow. Bicycles and feet (sometimes bare) are the preferred modes of transportation. Yoga classes are held within feet of Sarasota Bay. Classes frequently convene outdoors - on the lawn, under shady trees, or tucked between the colonnades at the Caples Fine Arts Center. Meetings with professors often take place at the Four Winds Café or on a bench overlooking the bay.

While we have beautiful historic mansions, state-of-the-art science facilities and well equipped dormitories, the sunny Florida weather and physical beauty of the New College campus call students outdoors -- from sunset sails on the bay to meetings of the mind at Palm Court. Ours is an accessible, inviting milieu. And it promises to get even better.

Nearly 50 years after our founding, a visionary master plan is transforming campus life. Five new "green" dorms opened in the fall of 2007 on the East Campus, residential hub of the college. (New College is committed to green building practices, sustainable design and progressive ecology, all crafted with input from students.) Nearby, renovations are in the works for the historic I.M. Pei dorms and courtyards surrounding Palm Court, as well as major improvements --including a "black box" theater-- to Hamilton Center, the student union also designed by Pei. Palm Court itself - affectionately referred to as "the center of the universe" by New College students and alums-will undergo a facelift, including new bricks and pavers.

In 2008-2009, we intend to break ground on a signature academic and administrative building near the library. A Center for International and Area Studies to support an enriched curriculum in this field is planned for 2010. Retail and recreational complexes -perhaps even a new conference center - are also on the drawing board. So as you can see, we're not standing still!
