2008 Orientation

August 21-27

Orientation will begin on Thursday, Aug.  21st.  Move-in for new students is Thursday, Aug. 21st, 9am - noon in Sudakoff.

Friday, Aug. 22nd, 10:00pm: movie: Kandahar (2001)
Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf lenses this haunting drama that was shot during the Taliban era. The movie follows an Afghani-Canadian woman as she attempts to enter Afghanistan in search of her depressed sister. Since it's illegal for a woman to travel alone in Afghanistan, she must rely on the kindness of strangers, including a scrappy boy and a mysterious American doctor.

Sunday, Aug. 24th, 10:00pm: movie: Into Thin Air (1997)
In 1996, Jon Krakauer joins an experienced team of mountain climbers as they make the dangerous journey to the summit of Mount Everest. Krakauer has come along to write an article about the commercialization of the mountain, but when the conditions turn deadly, his only concern is survival. This exhilarating film is based on Krakauer's best-selling nonfiction book.

Monday, Aug. 25th, 11:00pm: movie:  Chasing Freedom (2004)
New York attorney Libby  is a go-getter who won't let anyone stand in the way of her success. When she accepts a pro bono case involving Meena, a young Afghan dissident seeking asylum in the United States after years of oppression under the Taliban, Libby finds her corporate dreams replaced by a growing sense of idealism. All Meena wants is freedom, and Libby is her only chance at getting a taste of it.

Tuesday, Aug. 26th, 10:00pm: movie: Vertical Limit (2000)
Trapped near the summit of K2, the world's second-highest mountain, Annie Garrett  radios to base camp for help. Brother Peter  hears Annie's message and assembles a team to save her and her group before they succumb to K2's unforgiving elements. But the rescuers face several terrifying events that could end the rescue attempt ... and their lives.

****David Oliver Relin will be giving a talk on campus, as well.
