Professor Zhang teaches Chinese language at all levels and offers courses on a wide range of topics in Chinese literature and culture. Her research interests include pre-modern Chinese narratives and culture, with an emphasis on the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries when vernacular fiction matured.
Her recent project examines the formation of literati community and the changing notion of author through “storytelling” and rewriting about fervent female readers in the 1620s and 30s.
