Provost's Message

I first visited New College of Florida in the spring of 2006 and knew that it was an excellent fit for me.  Just a few months later, I joined the administration as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. As a relative newcomer to the New College community, I can imagine what some of your questions may be as you search for the college that is right for you. 

Here are some of the things about New College that led me to move halfway across the country to join this nationally-recognized institution of higher learning:
  • A dedicated, talented faculty that is active in research and engages students in that research.
  • A small, bright, academically focused student body.
  • A philosophy that attracts students willing and able to be accountable for their own educational progress.
  • Close collaboration between faculty and students to shape appropriate educational programs.
  • A focus on helping students learn to be discoverers and creators of knowledge.
  • A system of student evaluation based on what students have learned and need to learn, not on earning points on examinations.
  • And, of course, our wonderful location for study and recreation on the shore of Sarasota Bay.
The New College approach is unusual.  It works.  Just take a look at the achievement of our graduates in earning Fulbright Fellowships, National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships and other national honors. Learn about the lives of our accomplished alums, who have gone on to become prominent entrepreneurs, artists, academicians, scientists and professionals.  They describe their years at New College as nothing short of life-changing.

I invite you to take the first step by exploring all of the facets of our highly-individualized liberal arts curriculum. Like me, you may discover that New College is an excellent fit.
