I started out at New York University, then transferred to New College and found my passion. I appreciate New College's 'build your own' approach to learning.

Russian Language & Literature

The Russian program at New College offers courses and tutorials in language and literature; in addition, students are strongly encouraged to pursue work in pertinent cognate areas such as history, political science, and intellectual history. Students are also required to engage in off-campus study at another institution or as a participant in at least one of the many available programs of language and cultural study in the United States and the former Soviet Union. New College students have participated in such outstanding programs as the Summer Russian School of Norwich University (Vermont) and the Cooperative Russian Language Program at Leningrad State University.

Courses and seminars offered on a regular basis at New College include language instruction from the elementary to the advanced level and a reasonably wide range of topics in nineteenth- and twentieth- century Russian literature; among them: A Survey of Nineteenth-Century Russian Prose, Russian Literature in the Twentieth Century, Dostoevsky: The Major Fiction, N.V. Gogol: A Seminar, and Russian Short Fiction. Literature will normally be the major academic component of any Russian Area of Concentration.
