Academic Areas
|
At New College, academics are divided into three main divisions: Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Within and between these divisions, we offer more than 30 different Areas of Concentration (majors), including several established interdisciplinary concentrations. Double, Joint, Combined and Special Program Areas of Concentration also may be designed following consultation and approval from faculty. Preparatory classes for professional school programs, such as law and medicine, can be arranged within most disciplines. Starting in summer 2009, we will also offer K-12 teaching certification. * The Area of Concentration in Chinese Language & Culture will be available starting in Academic Year 2009-2010. Double & Joint Areas of ConcentrationIt is possible to complete a Double Area of Concentration (or double major), for which you complete all the requirements for two different areas of concentration. You can also design a Joint-Disciplinary Concentration (we sometimes call this a “slash major”) in which you work with faculty from two different disciplines to design a coherent course of study. Examples include political science/international and area studies, music/philosophy, English/gender studies, and chemistry/environmental studies. Combined Areas of ConcentrationWe offer programs in three areas of concentration that can only be completed as part of a combined area of concentration:Computational Science Gender Studies Theater Special Program Areas of ConcentrationWith the approval of faculty, you can create your own Special Program Area of Concentration in an area that is not regularly offered at New College. Examples include cultural studies, entomology, and gender and ethnic studies. Usually these special areas are modeled on similar programs offered at other colleges and universities.Professional School PreparationStudents may prepare for professional school in the context of most Areas of Concentration offered at New College. Faculty and the Office of Career Services provide guidance for students preparing for medical or veterinary school, law or business school, and other advanced degree programs. Currently Cathy Cuthberston, Director of the Office of Career Services, serves as the pre-law advisor and Sandra Gilchrist, Professor of Biology, advises pre-med students.Becoming a Teacher at New CollegeStarting in summer 2009, Manatee Community College will offer New College graduates an opportunity to receive K-12 teacher certification through an intense, six-week Alternative Certification Program on the New College campus. |
